Rationale
Students have a right to instruction based in state and national standards as they relate to the school and library’s mission and vision. These policies are put in place to help guide instruction for the benefit of all students.
Policy
- The librarian will develop a curriculum for each grade level based on their development, state and national standards, social-emotional needs and equity, and academic needs in conjunction with the curriculum of the school.
- The librarian will use the AASL, ISTE, and Linking for Learning in conjunction with the sources listed below to develop a scope and sequence for the school library curriculum.
- Mentor texts for scope and sequence that the librarian will refer to:
Procedure- Reading & Literacy Promotions, Celebrations & Programs
- The librarian will provide and promote the books for the state award lists (i.e. Monarch, Bluestem, Rebecca Caudill, and Lincoln).
- Students will be given the opportunity, each year, to vote for their favorite books for these awards and participate in book events centered around the awards/ books.
- This is done in support of the library’s mission to support student choice in reading and providing and promoting diverse books to students.
Procedure- Supervision Responsibilities for Teacher Librarian-
The teacher- librarian has different duties at each building.
- Emden Grade School- The teacher librarian will supervise and teach two-three 30 minute library sessions each day.
- Hartsburg-Emden High School- The teacher-librarian will be present in the school library during the first half of the day. Middle and high school students may come to the library during their study halls to work, research, or read. The librarian does teach Journalism during one of these hours, but students are welcome to come in and quietly browse or work and self-checkout books.

- Monday- 2nd grade, blended 3rd/ 4th grade
- Tuesday- 1st grade, blended 3rd/ 4th grade
- Wednesday- kindergarten, 5th grade
- Thursday- 1st grade, 2nd grade
- Friday- kindergarten- 5th grade
- Hartsburg-Emden Grade School- different each year
- 1-3rd hour open availability (co-teach, drop-teach, student drop-in, etc)
- 4th hour- library open, but teacher- librarian unavailable-- teaching Journalism

Procedure- Student Clubs & Camps
- Hartsburg-Emden participates in #projectlit. Students can choose to be involved in the middle school or high school book clubs focused around the #projectlit books. This is voluntary and supports student choice and equity.
Procedure- Welcoming Students
- The teacher-librarian will ensure that all new students are placed in the check-out database.
- The teacher-librarian will instruct new students on check-out procedures and give them an orientation to the school library.
- The teacher-librarian will invite new students to their age-appropriate library Google Classroom.
Procedure- Collaborative Instruction
- The teacher-librarian will be available both before and after school, by appointment, to work in collaboration with other teachers. The administration will provide time for the teacher-librarian to then co-teach and/ or drop-teach into classes as the teacher's request.
